3 Reason I Quit the American Dream Job

The company I resigned from before becoming a flight attendant was my “American dream” job. A little back story on that: I actually interviewed for the very same company a few years prior and was sent a “Thanks, but No Thanks” letter. I was devastated. But instead of wallowing in my sorrows, I moved to Spain instead. Little did I know that my move abroad would change my view on life – forever! During my time in Spain, I fell in love with travel. And I fell hard. I spent two wonderful years living in Barcelona where I studied Spanish the first year, taught English the second, and traveled throughout Europe during both.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”center” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” z_index=””][vc_column]

[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]I often get asked, “why did I return to the United States if I loved my life abroad?” To put it simple … I was broke. Truly. Honestly. My savings had depleted and I didn’t actually have a “real” job. In the last 6 months of my stay in Barcelona, I interned with a company earning 250 euros per month. That is roughly 270 USD. Did you laugh when you read that? I sure did – but I was determined to stay in Spain to live my adventurous life. So teaching high school students and living with strangers seemed like the only option. Thankfully, the host families provided free room and board along with delicious home-cooked, Catalan meals. Even though the pay was a joke – the thing that I would cherish the most from my experience was the AMAZING people I met. More like family. And that alone was worth every bit of the struggle.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_column_text]… But the fact still remained … I was broke! And because of my “broke-a**-ness”, I couldn’t travel how I became accustomed to. To go from traveling every other weekend to practically not at all was discouraging. The private teaching and tutor lessons that I had on the side wasn’t cutting it. In addition to my weight increasing and my health declining – it all contributed to my unhappiness.

So, with my tail between my legs – back to the States I went. I was then determined to get a great job so that I could afford to travel wherever I wanted to travel and whenever I wanted to travel. Thanks be to God, the same “American dream” job that I had an interest in before leaving for Spain had an interest in me. I was ecstatic! I began working for one of the world’s leading mutual fund companies, making great figures (with excellent benefits), residing in a gorgeous apartment within a boogie-a** neighborhood – while paying too much for rent. I could afford it, so why not? Right? WRONG!

A year and a half later – I hated my “American dream” job and my not so adventurous life. Yes, I was able to travel to Dubai, Thailand, and a few domestic States during that time but – that wasn’t enough. Some people may read that last statement and think that I’m ungrateful. And it may sound that way to a “non-traveler”, but it is what it is. For me – it wasn’t good enough. And here’s why:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_empty_space]

PREDICTABLE

A predictable nine to five: I didn’t want to be stuck there five-days a week with two (very short) days on the weekends, just to start the entire process of a nine to five, five-days a week all over again. And again! And again! And again! It was a “Never Ending Story.” And to make matters worse, I was ONLY granted two-weeks of paid-time-off, per year. What kind of establishment were they running?! (FYI: two weeks is the average vacation allowance in the United States. LUDICROUS!)

SUFFOCATING

I didn’t want to be stuck in an office for more than half of my day. Doing the same tasks, over and over again. Seeing the people, day after day, getting the same ol questions: “How was your evening” or “Any plans for tonight/weekend.” It drove me nuts. I needed every bit of Jesus to keep me from saying what I really wanted to say. And ain’t nobody got time to be tried and tested like that! Thankfully, when I left work for the day I didn’t have to take work with me. No after hour projects to stress over, nor did I have calls from clients to worry about. But, that wasn’t a good enough selling point for me either. The issue was I didn’t have time to focus on ME and MINE! The way I see it is this: Why grind for somebody else’s business and dream when I could be spending that time grinding for my very own? Now let that sit in your pot and simmer.

B.O.R.I.N.G.

It was boring. Point, blank and the period. My life just wasn’t exciting anymore. I needed excitement. I would sit at my desk day after day, daydreaming of my next adventure (whenever that was), and wishing I had more time off to explore the world. My days became less work productive and more productive on feeding my face at my desk (because I’m an emotional eater) all while planning my next moves.

It no longer fit me. It no longer fit the lifestyle that I desired. Nope, I’ll pass. And so I did.

Now, as I sit on my very first “standby” assignment out of LaGuardia airport, I can’t help but smile. I did it! I mustered up the courage to quit my great paying, stable nine to five job, with the best benefits I’ve ever had. I quit that job to have a career as a flight attendant – where I’m exhausted all of the time, always away from family and friends and living in a city where it’s much too expensive to live. #shouldershrug. Not everyone will get it – and that’s ok. Just as Carrie Bradshaw said, “…I have the luxury to design my own life.” And that’s exactly what I intend to do.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column width=”1/3″]

[/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]If you liked this read and find your self asking, “Why did she become a flight attendant?” Then head over to part two of this series. I discuss why I specifically became a flight attendant for the nation’s best airline. Here’s a sneak peek – I get to travel for work and when I’m not working, I got to travel for free. Which sounded good to me![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Thank you for stopping by. Until next time: stay inspired, keep believing, and be blessed.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space]
